Director overcomes life-threatening adversity, makes groundbreaking feature alone

Director Eric Chamberlain has completed his new feature film, Gyrus. The film, written, directed, produced, shot, acted, scored and edited entirely by Chamberlain, was produced over seven years in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After working with other actors fell through, Chamberlain made the revolutionary decision to make the film completely by himself. It was an extraordinary journey.

“My inability to govern my creative energy led to life-threatening self-destructive behavior," says Chamberlain. "I had to become a filmmaker to save my own life. Some of the visions in Gyrus are among my earliest memories as a child. Gyrus is the result and is, in a sense, semi-biographical.”

Adversity continued during the making of Gyrus. A person was murdered and beheaded in the arroyos where part of the film was shot. Chamberlain also nearly fell from a cliff while filming. To prepare for the role, Chamberlain lost 60 lbs in four months. The combination of maintaining weight loss and doing everything himself led to three ambulance rides to the ER due to overexertion. His mother, Carolyn, suffered a stroke, with Chamberlain then looking after her while in production. Chamberlain, himself, completed the film while wearing a heart monitor.

Gyrus follows a man who seeks his way home, first physically, then spiritually as the film evolves into the single moment between life and eternity. The film is ground-breaking not only because it was made a by a single person, but in how it was made, as well.

“Most films have pieces within that evolve over time. Gyrus evolves as a whole without losing the connection to where it began. It’s like an invisible serpent of divine energy, always changing shape but always the same creature. I wanted to create an impression of an event, not just a story with images. I wanted the film to be a reflection of the world, and to reveal the divine in the mundane."

Gyrus is produced by Angelic Engineering, currently in development on Chamberlain’s next film.
